18. Maintenance of registers and records.-(1) Every employer shall maintain such registers and records giving such particulars of employees employed by him, the work performed by them, the wages paid to them, the receipts given by them and such other particulars and in such form as may be prescribed.

(2) Every employer shall keep exhibited, in such manner as may be prescribed, in the factory, workshop or place where the employees in the scheduled employment may be employed, or in the case of out workers, in such factory, workshop or place as may be used for giving out-work to them, notices in the prescribed form containing prescribed particulars.

(3) The appropriate Government may, by rules made under this Act, provide for the issue of wage books or wage slips to employees employed in any scheduled employment in respect of which minimum rates of wages have been fixed and prescribed, the manner in which entries shall be made and authenticated in such wage books or wage slips by the employer or his agent.

State Amendments

Bihar-In section 18, after sub-section (3), add the following sub-section,-

"(4) The appropriate Government may, by rules made under this Act, also provide for the issue of identity cards and services certificate to employees employed in any scheduled employment in such form and containing such particulars as may be prescribed."

Madhya Pradesh-(1) In section 18 after sub-section (3), add the following :

“(4) Every employer shall in such scheduled employment as the State Government may, by notification, specify in this behalf, display a notice of period of work-including overtime in respect of all of his employees in such manner as may be prescribed".

(2) After section 18, insert the following new section 18A:

"18A. Chief Inspector.- The State Government may, by notification, appoint any person to be the Chief Inspector who shall exercise such powers and perform such duties , throughout the State as may be prescribed".4

Note.-Section 18-Aas inserted by M,P. Act II of 1959 is now numbered as section 22CC by M.P. Act 23 of 1961, section 21 (b) (w.e.f. 23-6-1961).

Maharashtra-In section 18, in sub-section (3) after the word "wages slips", at both the places where they occur, the words "and attendance-cards" shall be inserted.

Uttar Pradesh-This section does not apply to local authorities in U.P.

This Section does not apply to employees employed in certain employment in U.P.3
